“Doctor Garcia,” the sound of that was intriguing and enticing, so much so that it was the incentive for me to start my journey of higher learning. The only question I had to ask myself was how I was going to accomplish this. I was working full time and had a family to consider in this.
As a military retiree, I often received emails, mail flyers, and saw ads on TV and social media for which spouted the opportunities to study online in a virtual classroom. In 2012, when I decided I wanted to pursue my dream, the University of Phoenix (UoP) was the school the military endorsed and the one offering various virtual doctoral programs. Best of all, my GI Bill covered the cost of tuition and materials. So there I was ready to go and enrolled in my new adventure. After a few class, I wasn’t satisfied with UoP and attending their first of many in-person weekend residencies, I knew I needed a more challenging and engaging program of instruction.
One thing that UoP taught me early was to do research before continuing and it was through my research that I found California Intercontinental University (CIU). Along the way, I did venture into the realms of other institutions. I met a lot of staff and received a number of sales pitches about how great and wonderful they are. None of them appealed to me and some scared me. I had not heard of CIU before but after reading about their program and some of the testimonials, I knew it was the right place for me.
First thing to work on was transferring from UoP to CIU, how would I transfer my credits and set up my VA benefits. I know I had done a lot of work getting into UoP and feared the transfer would be a daunting task. All my concerns and questions were quickly addressed by my new and very helpful Admissions Advisor. She was very helpful, knew the answers to my questions before I asked them, and made the transition very smooth. I knew from this point, if everyone else at CIU was just a fraction as supportive and assistive as my advisor was, then I had made the right choice.
My decision to pursue my Doctorate in Business Administration through CIU is one that I know was right. CIU may not be as well-known as Harvard or Columbia, but the institution is one I am proud of being affiliated with and prouder yet of being an alumni. CIU staff and faculty is definitely determined to foster a positive learning environment and promotes knowledge through a dedicated and professional program of instruction.
