Falcons are renowned for their speed, agility, and ability to reach astonishing speeds of up to 240 mph in a dive. In many ways, JaVon Maxwell embodies that same electrifying energy, soaring through the air for thunderous dunks and game-changing blocks. Now, the dynamic junior wing is set to make history as the first-ever signee for the California Intercontinental University Falcons basketball program.
Head Coach, Gamal Smalley, who affectionately nicknamed Maxwell “Air Max,” couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him to the squad. “JaVon is not only an incredibly gifted athlete, but his character and leadership stand out the moment you meet him,” Smalley expressed. “He represents exactly the kind of student-athlete we want to build our program around.”
A transfer from Santa Ana College, JaVon originally hails from Houston, Texas, where he and his twin brother cultivated a deep love for the game. Reflecting on their journey, he shared, “Having a twin is amazing, he’s my best friend and the one who kept me motivated in basketball. Growing up, we’d battle one-on-one constantly, pushing each other to be better. That’s where my passion and competitive drive were born.”
JaVon’s path to California began a few summers ago when he visited the state and connected with Coach Mason, a mentor who provided invaluable guidance and an opportunity to play at the community college level. Since then, he has embraced every moment, building lasting friendships, sharpening his skills, and preparing to bring his experience and enthusiasm to CIU.
“I chose CIU because of the culture Coach Smalley is already creating,” JaVon explained. “I’m looking forward to learning from him, not just in basketball but in life.”
